MUSIC FOR RADIO

I enjoy working for radio. Which is just as well because the money is terrible; but it’s terrible for everyone so most people are there because they enjoy working in that medium, which makes the whole process a better experience…mostly.

I wrote the theme music for the BBC Radio 4 six-part adaptation of Andrea Levy’s wonderful novel, Small Island. I had to compose and record a generic theme plus a series of specific codas that could introduce each episode and cover the announcements at the beginning of the broadcast. Here is the main theme plus the one that introduced the episode in Jamaica.

In 2021 I was asked to write the music for Caribbean Convicts, a radio docu-drama about Enslaved people from the Caribbean who had ended up as convicts and shipped to Australia. It was written by Sienna Brown and produced by Ben Etherington for ABC Radio in Sydney.

Part of the story of Caribbean Convicts emphasised links between black convicts and the plight of indigenous peoples. This was the closing music for the programme.
