PASSPORTS TO THE PROMISED LAND

In association with Sheffield Theatres at Greenwich Theatre and National Tour

Passports To The Promised Land was an hilarious and serious tale of love and revenge on an epic scale. A musical like no other, in which calypso and reggae meet gospel and lovers rock; where hip-hop and opera sat with samples, swing beats and soul. Musical styles were plundered and fused to produce a magical tale of today and tomorrow.

Directed by Graham Devlin

There are many sayings in the theatre; ‘Never say “good luck” always “break a leg”; never mention “Macbeth”, always “the Scottish Play”; and most important: never attempt to write the complete Book, Music & Lyrics of a full-length show all by yourself.  I did this for my company Nitro (whilst also running the company…) and I don’t think I slept for 6 months. If I could do it again, I wouldn’t. But I did. Nevertheless, I’m pleased with the music and lyrics, which mix both gospel and Catholic religious influences with different Caribbean music forms. And there’s a bit of comedy too….

‘A seamless piece of contemporary black musical theatre that is both celebratory and reflective, populist and musically sophisticated.’
