TOO OLD FOR LEO
Another in a series of headphone verbatim project led by Kristine Landon-Smith, this time the subject matter was inspired by the social memes about Leonardo Di Caprio’s apparent penchant for girlfriends who are considerably younger than him. The cast—Kristine’s ex-students, now working professionally in theatre—interviewed friends and relatives with experience of this type of behaviour. The resulting piece—hilarious and moving—was performed at The Drayton Arms theatre on Old Brompton Road, London.
Searching for a way in, I was reminded of Di Caprio’s film, Catch Me If You Can, which is set in early 1960s USA, in the glamorous world of airline pilots and stewardesses. Sinatra’s “Come Fly With Me” sprang to mind and gave me the key to unlock the door. I wrote my main theme and from that adapted all the other cues, which heralded the emotional themes of each new section of the show.
